Giving to Our Community

Since its inception in 1981, Auction Napa Valley has given $85 million to dozens of Napa County health, youth development and affordable housing Napa County non-profits. In 2008, Auction Napa Valley distributed more than $7.26 million.

The wine industry is Napa Valley's heart, and the vintner community takes pride in its role in contributing to the health and wellbeing of the county's residents, and the 2008 grants contribute to every community from American Canyon to Calistoga. Below are the 2008 Auction Napa Valley beneficiaries.

 

Health and Wellness funding strategy

  • Promote wellness through prevention and early intervention.
  • Provide healthcare screening and treatment services.
  • Provide accessible mental health services to promote positive social and emotional development.

Aldea Children and Family Services - $150,000
Aldea Children & Family Services provides mental health services for uninsured and underinsured Napa children and families. The approved funds will allow Aldea to place therapists in Napa County schools to work with students, teachers and parents.    

Children and Weight Coalition of Napa County - $23,000
The Children & Weight Coalition provides leadership and serves as a resource for evidence-based strategies that promote children's health through sound nutrition and physical activity. Auction Napa Valley funding will allow the coalition to continue delivery of nutrition and physical activity education throughout Napa County to address the problem of childhood obesity, through educational materials and the purchase of play equipment, healthy snacks and cookbooks for coalition sponsored events.

Community Action of Napa Valley - $30,000
CANV's Meals on Wheels program is the only daily, home-delivered meals program for seniors, the frail elderly, and the non-senior homebound low-income disabled and mentally disadvantaged in Napa County. Auction Napa Valley funding will provide meals-on-wheels services to approximately 70 low-income, homebound, disabled individuals who cannot be served through federal and state funding because they are under the age of 60.

Community Health Cinic Ole dba Sister Ann Community Dental Clinic - $500,000 Sister Ann Community Dental Clinic provides basic dental care to those who do not have access to private dental insurance and cannot afford to pay for private-sector care. Auction Napa Valley funding will help the clinic provide nearly 9,000 dental care visits to low-income and uninsured children in Napa Valley.

Community Health Clinic Ole - $1,150,000
Clinic Ole is the premier provider of health care prevention, education and treatment services for uninsured and underinsured people in Napa County. Funding from Auction Napa Valley will help the organization provide nearly 7,000 comprehensive primary care visits for low-income and uninsured children throughout Napa Valley.

Community Health Clinic Ole - $50,000
A second grant will allow Community Health Clinic Ole to provide services in risk-reduction and gang-violence protection through a "Your Alternatives to Risk" program to youth ages 11-18 through outreach in Napa County middle and high schools, Napa County Juvenile Hall and through home visits.

Cope Family Center - $150,000
Cope Family Center empowers families to create happy, healthy lives for children through child abuse prevention, parent education and family support services. Auction Napa Valley funding will support the SAFE Families program, which provides child-abuse prevention and intervention through home visits and parent education services to Napa families, including kinship caregivers and, through collaboration with Wolfe Center, families experiencing substance abuse.

COPIA: the American Center for Wine, Food & the Arts - $165,000
The 3.5 acres of Edible Gardens at COPIA serve as a living exhibition and outdoor classroom for exploring the links between people, the environment and the land. Auction Napa Valley funding will expand the Garden Walk/Table Talk School Group Tour Program, which educates children about how plants grow, how food is grown and how to make healthy and nutritious food choices. Developed in compliance with California State Science Curriculum Standards the program is designed to help children develop healthy eating habits.

Family Service of Napa Valley - $285,731
Auction Napa Valley funding will support Bridges--a partnership among lead agency Family Service of Napa Valley and Community Health Clinic Ole, Cope Family Center, Calistoga Family Center, American Canyon Family Resource Center, St. Helena Family Center, Parent-Child Advocacy Network, and NEWS-- which provides a countywide coordinated system of mental health care and referrals.

Family Service of Napa Valley - $15,000
Family Service of Napa Valley is committed to the emotional health and wellness of families and individuals in Napa County. Auction Napa Valley funding will be used to provide frail, low-income seniors with rides to critical medical and other health-related appointments.

Healthy Moms and Babies - $250,000
Healthy Moms & Babies is the only comprehensive prenatal service program in Napa County offering bilingual case management for prenatal care. Funding from Auction Napa Valley will help provide comprehensive perinatal education and support for low-income, uninsured women and their babies through culturally and linguistically appropriate case management, social services and nutrition education.

Napa County Health & Human Services Public Health - $62,500
Welcome Every Baby is a collaboration between Napa County Health & Human Services Public Health, Queen of the Valley Community Outreach and Cope Family Center. Auction Napa Valley funding will support the program, which provides one year of nurse in-home visits for all infants born to Napa County residents and their families, which include assistance with breastfeeding, links to health services for baby and family, referrals for mental health issues, and education and child development guidance.

Napa Emergency Women's Services (NEWS) - $100,000
NEWS is the only provider of domestic violence services and shelter in Napa County. Their services include legal advocacy, transitional housing, shelter, counseling, health assessment and support groups. Funding will provide education, prevention and outreach service--including presentations to students in middle and high schools, law enforcement, local employers and others, as well as a children's program--for children who have experienced domestic violence.

Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services - $200,000
Hospice of Napa Valley is the only community-based nonprofit organization that provides hospice and adult day health services for the terminally and chronically ill. Funding will provide operating support for both programs, including rehabilitative medical care for the frail elderly, the chronically ill and disabled adults and their caregivers; care for the terminally ill and their families; and day and health programs for people with dementia.

Planned Parenthood: Shasta Diablo - $50,000
Planned Parenthood Shasta-Diablo (PPSD) offers a variety of reproductive services, public education and outreach throughout its service region and has been in Napa for over 18 years. Auction funding will support a half-time health educator to provide reproductive health education services to youth and their families through presentations in middle and high school classrooms, links to clinical services and parent-child workshops.

Planned Parenthood: Shasta Diablo - $50,000
A second grant will help provide reproductive health services to approximately 3,500 men and women, including teens, Spanish-speaking residents and others with limited access to medical services and information.

Queen of the Valley Medical Center Foundation - $500,000
Queen of the Valley Hospital is the largest, most comprehensive health care facility in the region. Auction Napa Valley funding will allow Queen of the Valley to purchase an integrated PET/CT scanner to improve diagnostic accuracy and treatment capacity.

Rianda House - $50,000
The Rianda House, a new senior center located in St. Helena, provides programs and activities that promote socialization, education, recreation and a healthy lifestyle for seniors. Auction Napa Valley funding will provide general operating support for the center.

St. Helena Family Center - $40,000
Since its founding in 2005, the St. Helena Family Center has opened its doors to myriad individuals and families in St. Helena and the surrounding area to help them obtain the information, support, guidance and services they need to enhance and enrich their lives and to be productive members of their families and our community. Auction Napa Valley funding will provide access to high-quality mental and behavioral health treatment and early intervention programs, including mentoring programs for youth, and parent and community education workshops.

St. Helena Hospital Foundation - $500,000
St. Helena Hospital is a full-service nonprofit community hospital that provides acute care and community wellness programs. Auction funding will allow the hospital to purchase a Varian line accelerator with intensely modulated and image-guided radiation therapy, which will provide local access to needed cancer treatment services.

St. Helena Hospital Foundation - $200,000
A second grant will provide a one-time donation to support continued operation of JobCare at the St. Helena Hospital location.

The Salvation Army - $75,000
For the past 20 years the Salvation Army Napa Corps has provided a meal program for the needy in Napa County known as the Neighborhood Table. Funding will provide meals through the program to the homeless, the working poor and families in need; as well as provide meals to residents of the South Napa shelter.

The Women's Diagnostic Center - $108,686
The St. Helena Women's Center focuses on women's health issues and provides easy access for high-quality breast cancer and osteoporosis prevention services through mammography and bone density testing. Auction Napa Valley funding will support a chronic disease prevention program that will provide 100 mammograms, 35 breast ultrasounds, 100 bone density tests and 600 cardiac risk screenings to low-income family, migrant farmworkers and seniors at no cost.

Vine Village, Inc. - $40,000
Vine Village provides a full-service residential and day program to people with developmental disabilities, designed to optimize the physical and mental health and well-being of the clients. Auction funding will provide general operating support.

Children and Youth funding strategy

  • Intervene early to improve very young children's and families' psychological and social functioning.
  • Build the base for lifelong learning through early childhood literacy and other efforts to help children succeed in school.
  • Support efforts that increase high school graduation and college entrance rates and narrow educational attainment disparities.
  • Reduce risk behaviors, including substance use and supporting early efforts that foster positive youth development, with an emphasis on middle-school age youth.

Angwin Community Teen Center - $35,000
The Angwin Community Teen Center provides a safe, accepting, nurturing and stimulating environment for healthy teen growth and empowerment using a broad spectrum of community involvement, and teaches pre-teens and teens coping and resilience skills that will enable them to successfully navigate the teen years. Auction Napa Valley funding will help provide an after-school and summer mentoring program as well as youth support services for adolescents in the Angwin community.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the North Bay - $50,000
Big Brothers Big Sisters North Bay enriches the lives of children and the community through quality one-to-one mentoring relationships. Auction Napa Valley funding will allow Big Brothers Big Sisters to recruit and train new adult mentors, who will be matched up with children ages 6-17, to increase the students' communication skills, reduce risk behaviors and improve school performance. Funds will also provide a Youth4Youth mentoring program for elementary and middle school youth matched with high school mentors at after-school programs through four sites in Napa, American Canyon, Calistoga and the Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Napa Valley - $200,000
The Boys and Girls Club of Napa Valley provides a wide range of after-school activities for 6 - 18 year-olds. Auction Napa Valley funding will help support after-school youth-oriented services at eight sites in Napa and American Canyon and open two more sites at McPherson and Salvador Elementary Schools in support of the agency's Impact 2012 Initiative to improve academic achievement, character-building and civic engagement.

Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Helena and Calistoga - $100,000
The Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Helena and Calistoga are the only up-valley youth organizations offering daily after-school and summer youth development, recreational and educational activities for young people in grades 1 through 12. Auction Napa Valley funding will help the Club, in collaboration with school districts in those communities, to continue to provide after-school educational, social and recreational services for school-aged-children in St. Helena and Calistoga .

Calistoga Community Pool Project (CCP) - $15,000
Working in partnership with private and public entitites,The Calistoga Community Pool Project's purpose is to raise funds for needed aspects of the pool facility, such as programming, with an emphasis on children's health, safety and education; family amenities and construction using environmentally-friendly technology. Auction Napa Valley funding will provide a bilingual swim program based on a successful model that will bring children and families together to learn basic water safety and swim skills.

Calistoga Family Center - $75,000
The Calistoga Family Center exists to make physical and mental healthcare services and parent education accessible to every family in Calistoga. Auction Napa Valley funding will help provide 100 families per year with integrated, family-centered services that connect parents to each other and to needed resources, through one-on-one support and parent education, with special outreach for families with adolescents.

Child Start Inc. - $80,500
Child Start promotes the health, social, economic and educational growth of low-income children and families. The Raising a Reader program is a book delivery system and program focusing on pre-school children and their families to promote literacy and kindergarten readiness. Auction Napa Valley funding will provide materials and support to parents of children ages 0-6 through partnerships with early childhood and family support agencies that promote early childhood literacy.

Child Start Inc. - $125,000
A second grant will allow child Start to serve 302 low-income families enrolled in Head Start and Early Head Start in Napa County through a Family Focus Initiative, which links parents to education opportunities through home dental education, basic skills education, career training, monthly parent support groups and community resources.

Christian Brothers Ranch - $25,000
The Christian Brothers Ranch (CBR) was established in 2000 as a non-sectarian, innovative, educational, outreach program for at-risk youth in Napa County. The year-round program is dedicated to providing a safe place with a nurturing, stable environment. Auction Napa Valley funding will provide an outreach and education program based on 4-H and Future Farmers of America for 25 at-risk youth who cannot afford that program, which will include animal husbandry activities and ranching experiences; academic tutoring; a college savings account established through the annual proceeds of their animal sales at the Napa Town and Country Fair; and transportation from school to the Ranch and home.

Community Resources for Children - $50,000
Community Resources for Children is entering its 31st year of providing resources for the early care and education of children in Napa County. Auction Napa Valley funding with continue support for developmental screening of children and home visits for quality improvement to 20 new childcare providers.

CyberMill Technology Center - $65,000
CyberMill provides youth with opportunities to learn digital/computer skills, helps them develop social skills and fosters working relationships among youth, adults and seniors. CyberMill is becoming the primary coordinator of after-school computer-based activities at other youth-serving non-profit agencies. Auction Napa Valley will supplement funding for learning enrichment program for disadvantaged and low-achieving students in Napa, and sports and other non-traditional activities through a partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Napa Valley.

Napa CASA, A Voice for Children - $40,000
The Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Napa program serves children (0-18) who have become dependents of the Napa County Court system, when their parents or guardians have been incarcerated or deemed unfit to care for the child. Auction Napa Valley funding will increase to 40 of the number of screened, trained and supervised community members who will serve as CASA advocates for abused and neglected children.

Napa Valley Adult Education - $85,030
Napa Valley Adult Education operates the FIRST STEP/PRIMER PASO project, a bilingual kindergarten transition for parents and children. Auction Napa Valley funding will provide support for 130 parents and children at four elementary schools in the Napa Valley Unified School District, especially targeted to disadvantaged children with little or no previous preschool experience, that will include follow-up through 2 nd grade and parent education classes.

On The Move-V.O.I.C.E.S. - $100,000
This effort is focused on achieving systemic change in Napa County's Foster Youth program, and the young adults who are "emancipated" at the age of 18 years, with little or no money or independent living skills, and frequently with mental and physical health issues. Auction Napa Valley funding will sustain the Emancipating Foster Youth Project and the VOICES Foster Youth Emancipation Center by providing support services for housing, education, employment and health needs.

Puertas Abiertas (A program of Spirit of Unity, Napa) - $15,648
The goal of the Puertas Abiertas Community Resource Center is to work with Spanish-speaking Napa County residents to inspire and achieve healthy living, self sufficiency and opportunities for community engagement and leadership. Auction Napa Valley funding will support the planning and implementation of Our Middle School Academy, a program for Spanish-speaking parents of middle school English-learners that teaches parenting skills, adolescent development, school success factors, community involvement and English as a Second Language, with the goal of reducing risk behaviors and increasing academic success.

Summer Search North Bay - $42,000
Summer Search is a youth development program that identifies resilient, low-income high school students and inspires them to become responsible, altruistic leaders. Auction Napa Valley funding will support an additional Program Associate position that will provide low-income Napa youth with ongoing mentoring, life-changing summer experiences, access to college and financial aid resources, leadership skills and a lasting network of alumni support.

Wolfe Center - $200,000
The Wolfe Center offers intensive alcohol and drug prevention, intervention, treatment, assessments, parent support and after-care services for adolescents. It is the only agency of its kind serving adolescents at this level of treatment in Napa County. Auction funding will support services, from prevention to intensive treatment for adolescents and their families; parent and family involvement activities; and early intervention and treatment at Napa County schools and family centers.

 

Housing funding strategy

  • Enable organizational capacity necessary to seek available public or other funds for safe, affordable housing.
  • Support programs that provide outreach, education and advocacy for better housing choices and conditions.
  • Create more options for local workforce housing.

Calistoga Affordable Housing - $50,000
Calistoga Affordable Housing, Inc. (CAH) is a key partner in building or preserving affordable housing units in Calistoga. Funding from Auction Napa Valley will provide continued operating support for this small, growing organization.

Calistoga Affordable Housing - $200,000
A second grant will pay a portion of the estimated pre-development expenses for Cottage Glen, a 31-house subdivision proposed by the agency in which 87% of the homes will be classified as affordable.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Santa Rosa - $90,000
Catholic Charities offers a variety of social and human services for the needy in Napa County. Auction Napa Valley funding will support transitional housing and supportive services to help homeless and at-risk youth develop life skills and support systems through a case-management program at Home Base and Rainbow House. Housing and support services would be provided to 35 youth ages 18-24 and 15 children ages 0-6 each year.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Santa Rosa - $100,000
This second grant will provide the leverage needed to seek matching funds for loan payoff in order to receive $945,000 renovation grant for the transitional housing program at Rainbow House and Home Base.

Community Action of Napa Valley/NVSP - $65,000
Community Action of Napa Valley's goal is to increase the self-determination and self-sufficiency of economically disadvantaged individuals and families and of senior citizens. Auction Napa Valley funding will assist Community Action of Napa Valley in transitioning people from homeless shelters to permanent housing through a combination of housing subsidies to fill the gap between the cost of housing and income, and home-based case management services.

Fair Housing Napa Valley - $80,000
Fair Housing Napa Valley (FHNV) is the only agency in Napa County designated to provide tenant/landlord counseling and training. Auction Napa Valley funding will allow FHNV to continue to provide fair housing, mortgage default and tenant and landlord counseling services to 790 households; community outreach to 3,600 persons; and housing education to 300 persons, including housing professionals and Social Services staff, in both English and Spanish.

Legal Aid of Napa Valley - $71,500
Legal Aid of Napa Valley provides free, bilingual, legal assistance to seniors, immigrants and low-income residents of Napa County. Auction Napa Valley funding will provide access to legal advice, representation and education services to help stabilize immigrants’ housing situations.

Napa County Housing Authority - $98,300
Napa County Housing Authority mission is to provide adequate housing for Napa County farmworkers. Auction funding will be used to maintain and support three farmworker centers that provide up to 180 seasonal agricultural workers with meal service and clean, safe housing.

Napa Valley Community Housing - $200,000
Napa Valley Community Housing has been building low-income housing for more than ten years, and approximately 80% of their current tenant base is Hispanic. Auction Napa Valley funding will provide ongoing support for the Farmworker Advocate position; resident services at existing properties and a new senior property; and to support the development of three identified buildable sites in Napa County and three possible downtown Napa mixed use (retail/housing) sites.

Additional Funding

Capacity Building - $50,000
Continuation of pooled funding from Auction Napa Valley, Gasser Foundation, Napa Valley Community Foundation and the Jones Family Foundation. Funds are awarded for any one-time assistance that will improve the capacity of the organization to conduct business through IT assessments or equipment; strategic planning; staff and executive training; leadership transition planning; board development; and fundraising consulting.

Emergency Set-Aside - $211,105
Set-aside funding that is kept available for urgent, unexpected needs that may arise outside the regular grant cycle.
